ᝰ THE STORY
Legend says that Mount Agung was born from a fragment of the mythological Mountain Meru, which was thought to be the connection between heaven and earth.
The lifestyle orientation of the Balinese is dictated by the kaja-kelod axis (north-south) where kaja means “toward the mountains”, and kelod means “towards the sea”. Agung therefore is a very important symbol of life for the Balinese.
As the highest peak and degree of sacredness of the island, it is seen here in the distance, towering over the lush rice fields of the eastern part of Bali, which hold the title of being some of the most impressive on the island.
Agung affects its surrounding climate and provides rich volcanic soil making it easy for the rice to grow abundantly, giving the farmers the opportunity to get two to three crops yearly and making the fields’ color shift from shades of light greens to deep yellows.
For thousands of years, generations of Balinese farmers have harmoniously changed the island’s landscape by terracing hillsides so that they can grow rice. In a way, the Balinese also view rice as a gift from God and a symbol of life, just like the very sacred Agung.
Arcadia explores this close relationship between the island’s complex natural layers and the harmony among humans, nature, and the divine with Mount Agung in the backdrop, in order to put into value the never-ending cycle of life.
