ᝰ THE STORY
Legong is the ultimate classical Balinese dance which dates back from the late nineteenth century, today part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2015.
Choreographed to a set pattern with the finest detail, the dance has been well-preserved through generations. The word Legong itself comes from the origin of the word ‘leg’ which means flexible and ‘gong’ which means traditional drum or gamelan. Legong is a refined and complex dance. It is known for its physically demanding postures and fast-paced movements which require a significant level of agility, flexibility, and quickness among its young dancers.
Traditionally, it was performed by pre-adolescent girls. Here it is danced by Devi, a 17-year-old girl who began learning it as young as the age of six.
Classical Legong dances enact several traditional stories and a collection of heroic romances as angels divinely dancing in the heavens.
It was here visually distinctive through Devi’s iconic costume, which comprised a golden floral headdress of considerable size and weight, along with complete regalia from shoulders to feet. Devi was well-trained and was carrying out movements effortlessly, despite the bulk of her outfit.
The choreography is highly stylized, to be enjoyed for its own beauty; but the dance develops into one of a number of storylines, danced in an abstract manner.
