ᝰ THE STORY
A Balinese man is walking and carrying a sokasi in his hand, a handcrafted bag made of woven bamboo woven, on the day of Galungan. Galungan actually takes its root from the Javanese word "win", and this special day celebrates for Hindu Balinese the victory of Dharma over Adharma (good over evil). It is, to them, the most important day of the year. For any Balinese families, it marks the time when ancestral spirits of deceased relatives come back to Earth and visit them. As the spirits of each family return to visit their former homes, the Balinese have the responsibility to be hospitable and welcome them with prayers and offerings throughout their home.
The beauty of the numerous offerings, the richness in the details of every temple where each family adorns their shrines with flags and penjors—highly noticeable bamboo poles which accommodate offerings suspended at the end, found along the roads in front of every Balinese house—the pleasant music with the so typical gamelan and other theatrical performances are not here to fancy the expectations of the foreigners in thirst of colorful exoticism only, but instead aim to keep their ancestors from growing bored and leaving.
Penglipuran is probably one of the most photogenic villages during that time, as the disposition of the numerous penjors all lining up alongside the entranceway remain somewhat atypical from other villages. It is often for this aesthetic reason the hamlet is mostly visited on that day.
