ᝰ THE STORY
A long hot day is about to end. A fisherman is spotted in the middle of the ocean sailing back to the shore as the sun is setting down over the long northeastern coastal strip of Bali, revealing the majestic Mount Agung in the background, followed by Mount Abang and Mount Batur at the back.
Far away from the buzzing crowds, the traffic, and the noise of south Bali, this region sits between the mountains and the sea and unfolds over a 10km stretch of a series of traditional villages, where Amed is one of the most famous.
Developed for tourism in the early 21st Century, the region’s remote nature and the generally harsh environment for farming meant that this area was very much one of the poorest areas in Bali and struggled to have consistent tourism-based revenue. Most of the inhabitants of the region still live from fishing and salt-making, and more recently, tourism.
‘Between Sky & Ocean’ sets an idyllic backdrop where a lonely fisherman seems blend with the immensity of the ocean, overlooked by the silhouette of three successive volcanoes. The slow yet visible motions created by the fisherman’s boat add texture to the sea which coincidently seems to communicate with the patterns found in the cloudy sky.
