ᝰ THE STORY
I was riding my motorcycle that I unexpectedly stumbled upon an important crowd blocking the road. I heard the rhythmic sounds of the gendang Belek drums and the joyful claps. All of it created a festive atmosphere and I knew I had to stop. As the sun dipped low over the horizon, painting the sky with hues of yellow and orange, this village near the area of Bayan bustled with the excitement of a traditional Sasak wedding. I felt as if I was parachuted into something special uniting ancient traditions and sacred rites at the same time, but most importantly connecting all generations.
With my camera, I started navigating through the crowd to capture this event. The scene was so enchanting I could have stood there until the next day without getting tired. Adults and kids were all parading over an impressive line right in the middle of the road. I suddenly looked down and saw a little girl, no more than three years old, gazing up at me with her wide, curious eyes. It seemed as if we were both surprised to find each other in this place! The girl was dressed in a tiny traditional Sasak dress, her hairstyle adorned with two delicate buns, making her stand out from the crowd.
"Hello there," my lips blew, kneeling to the girl's level. "What's your name?"
“Aida Azahra”, the girl replied shyly, her small voice barely audible over the wedding festivities.
“Hello, Aida,” I smiled. "Did you ever attend a wedding before? It is a nice dress you are wearing!” Aida nodded enthusiastically, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
As the crowd shifted to a new direction and the entire village bathed in the warm light of the setting sun, the sounds of the wedding drifted up, mingling with the gentle rustling of the palm trees. It was a moment of pure magic. We were all there, standing, watching the show. Aida was not too far from me and I knew I had to photograph her. She invited me to join her and her friends, her laughter ringing out like a melody. The other children welcomed me eagerly. I didn’t know where to start, what to do, or even what to photograph. Everything was so beautiful that it felt great to feel alive. Aida’s joy was infectious. As the sun sank lower, casting a golden glow over the village, Aida was alone in the middle of this field when I took this frame.
“I just can’t believe it!” I was telling myself as I was clicking some of her portraits. I felt a surge of emotion when I was there it made my eyes teary. In Aida Azahra, I could see so many things. I could see the heart and soul of Lombok – its warmth, its joy, its timeless traditions. Even her name in Arabic means beautiful, bright, shining, and brilliant. Just too good to be believed it sends me goosebumps.
As we stood there together, watching the sun set over the village, I realized that in this very moment, this special encounter had touched me in a way I hadn’t expected. It was a reminder of the simple, profound connections that can be made across cultures and generations. In Aida’s eyes, I saw the future of Lombok, shining bright and full of promise.
As the last rays of sunlight disappeared behind the hills, I left the event, speechless. I just knew one thing though. I knew this moment, this beautiful, inspiring encounter with Aida would stay with me forever.
