A land of fire and faith, Java is the beating heart of Indonesia — home to over 60% of its population and shaped by centuries of shifting empires, sacred beliefs, and cultural convergence. Once the seat of majestic Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms, powerful Islamic sultanates, and the Dutch East Indies, the island today still pulses with the echoes of its layered past.

With over 40 volcanoes — many still active — and an extraordinary mosaic of ethnicities and traditions, Java reveals itself here through the intimate lens of French photographer Marius Moragues, capturing both the quiet resilience and vibrant soul of this iconic island.
