ᝰ THE STORY
In frame, a woman is walking in one of Jakarta's neighborhood streets to sell herbal drinks. Such sellers are more commonly called 'Mbok Jamu' where the word jamu itself comes from the word jampi in Javanese language, which means prayer and effort for health.
Indonesia is a country that relies heavily on the use of herbal medicines. They have been consumed by several generations since the time of their ancestors. People seem to be very attached to it, sometimes preferring it over the visit of a doctor. However, because Indonesia has so many different types of herbal medicine, it can become confusing which one to use depending on which situation.
The Mbok Jamu would usually prepare all the necessary ingredients. Before having them mixed, the herbal ingredients are dried, grated, and squeezed to get the juice or mixed directly one with another. Such herbal concoction is usually prepared manually, then served fresh as a drink. The Mbok Jamu would then usually carry all those concoctions with her in a woven basket firmly tied to her back to sell the drinks from house to house. The weight of the herbal baskets can reach 25 to 30 kilograms.
There are eight variants of herbal medicine that are carried in the basket, namely kencur, temu kunci, temulawak, turmeric, ginger, lempuyang, tamarind, or brotowali. These eight ingredients can be mixed to produce herbal concoctions according to customer requests and needs. It covers a wide array of uses such as aching rheumatic pain, stomachache, cold, menstruation, pregnancy, and more.
In ancient times, the Mbok Jamu wore a kebaya and sarong along with their hair tied in a bun to keep a neat appearance. I was lucky on that day to meet a woman back from those times as she was ticking all those characteristics! I had been obsessed on that day about her colorful attire that I lost track of my surroundings as I was following her at the same pace in order to snap photographs of her. She would be walking as if nothing happened. It was to my greatest surprise that, after checking back the photos, the background colors were perfectly matching her attire, as if it was too good to be true.
